2.3 [NEW] Unrulr Overview (OpenEd Academy 25-26)

Updated over 2 weeks ago

OpenEd Academy students have access to the social learning platform Unrulr, where they can connect with their peers, share what they're working on, and celebrate their achievements within a supportive online community.

Video resources:

Required vs. Optional

If you've selected certain curriculum options from the OpenEd Academy marketplace (like KiwiCo, Parent Supplied Curriculum, or Experience Based Curriculum), then your student might be required to use Unrulr as part of their learning.

If your curriculum choices don't list Unrulr as a requirement, then using the platform is totally optional - but it's an awesome way to track your student's milestones in a fun, engaging digital space!

How Credit Works In Unrulr Courses

Each Unrulr student will be supported by a subject matter expert who will guide them throughout their credit experience.

To receive credit in an Unrulr course, students are expected to:

  1. Participate Regularly

    • Log in consistently.

    • Post entries, reflections, or uploads throughout the course.

  2. Complete Key Assignments

    • Finish and document the main projects or activities listed in the course description.

  3. Show What You’ve Learned

    • Demonstrate understanding of course goals through reflections, project artifacts, assessments, or discussions recorded in Unrulr.

  4. Provide a Final Summary

    • Submit a short reflection, summary, or portfolio entry in Unrulr highlighting what was learned and accomplished.

For more info on how credit is awarded, check out this resource.

Why award credit at all: This system makes sure that every student's work is recognized fairly while also giving teachers the flexibility to adapt expectations based on the needs of each course and student.

How To Access Unrulr

After logging into the OpenEd platform, click on the Library tile from the lefthand sidebar.

You'll see a tile labeled Unrulr, which includes some access instructions.

Note: Unrulr uses a single sign-on through a Google or Microsoft account.

Currently, this is the only way to log in.

If you don't have a Microsoft or Gmail account, please reach out to us at [email protected].

For the best experience, we recommend downloading the Unrulr app - just click on the links we've included in your access instructions.

You can also get to Unrulr by clicking on the Access Product button from your library tile.

That will take you to the Unrulr website in your browser, where you can sign in with your Microsoft or Gmail account.

Troubleshooting Common Sign-In Issues

If more than one Microsoft account is active on your computer, you’ll see a list of accounts to choose from. If you don’t see the right username, click Use another account.

If you see a screen that says More information required, click Next.

If you see a screen that says Microsoft Authenticator, click Skip setup in the bottom right corner.

What To Expect

After logging into Unrulr, your student will see some motivating prompts provided by our teachers across the top of the screen. Click on a prompt to post a response.

Lower down, they'll see the feed of their classmates' posts.

To make a post of their own, your student should click the Create button.

They'll have the option to add some photos or videos; to share a text-only update, just click Skip.

Note: Unrulr supports most video and image file types, but you may have trouble adding live photos from your iPhone (the HEIC file type).

Your student will be asked to pick a few Cogs to associate with their post.

Cogs are like tags that help you create a sortable and filterable library of everything that your student has accomplished.

After they make their selections, click Next to write their update.

Sharing Permissions

Your student can choose who to share their post with – students and teachers, just teachers, or not shared with anyone else at all if they’d prefer to keep their update private.

Depending on their sharing settings, other members of their community might add some comments on your student's update after it's posted. Our community loves to shout out students' stellar work!

FAQs

Q: My students do not participate in social media platforms; I'm concerned about their privacy.

A: The safety and privacy of our students is a top priority! Unrulr is a secure, closed platform—students can only interact with approved teachers, classmates, and school staff. For parent-supplied and experience-based courses, students will not engage with peers on the platform. No public access or outside users are allowed.

Q: Can I see what my student posts?

A: Yes! Parents can be invited to view their student’s portfolio. You’ll be able to see posts, reflections, and teacher feedback so you can stay connected to your child’s learning journey.

Q: What if I don’t want my student to interact with other students on Unrulr?

A: No problem! Your student's account visibility is entirely up to you and your privacy settings.

If your student’s account is set up to only be visible to teachers, then no other students will be able to view, comment on, or interact with their posts. This setup ensures a focused, private learning experience while still allowing teachers to give individualized feedback and encouragement.
