4.1 Diploma-Seeking vs. Non-Diploma-Seeking Overview (Utah 25-26, Grades 9-12)

Updated over a week ago

If your OpenEd student is in grades 9-12, they have the choice to pursue one of two different paths: diploma-seeking or non-diploma-seeking.

Diploma-Seeking Path

On the diploma-seeking path, your student will earn a state-certified diploma through their school of enrollment.

To do this, your student must:

  • Earn 24 credits during their four years of high school enrollment

    • That means your student will need to take 6 credits per year for all four years of high school.

  • Select their classes from a specific list of providers approved by your school of enrollment

  • Score a 70% or better on a required Civics Test administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Division

    • Your student can take this test as many times as necessary to pass.

Non-Diploma-Seeking Path

On the non-diploma-seeking path, your student will not earn a state-certified diploma.

What this means for your student:

  • They'll have more curriculum options than students on the diploma-seeking path. Non-diploma-seeking students can choose from any of the options available in our marketplace.

  • They'll receive an OpenEd Certificate of Completion at the end of their senior year, representing all of their hard work and academic achievements.

  • They can still get into a great college. We recommend reaching out to any colleges that your student is considering to ask whether they will accept students who don't have a formal high school transcript.

    • Most higher education institutions will provide a way, whether by reviewing a portfolio of work, requiring a high ACT or SAT score, or asking for a transcript of any early college credits earned by your student.

For a more in-depth look at the diploma-seeking path, take a look at 4.4 Non-Diploma-Seeking Path. You can request a consultation with one of our dedicated non-diploma-seeking specialists through this form.

How To Change Your Student's Path

If your student decides that they would like to change the path that they're on, we're here to help.

Changing From Diploma-Seeking to Non-Diploma-Seeking

Your student can switch from diploma-seeking to non-diploma-seeking at any time.

If your student wants to change to non-diploma-seeking, please contact our Diploma-seeking Specialist here.

Changing From Non-Diploma-Seeking to Diploma-Seeking

Students can only switch from non-diploma-seeking to diploma-seeking between school years. You won't be able to make this change during the school year.

A student entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who wishes to transition from non-diploma-seeking to diploma-seeking must receive approval from both the OpenEd Diploma-seeking Specialist and the counselor at their school of enrollment.

To be on track for graduation, students need to have completed 6 credits per year of high school:

  • A student entering 10th grade will need to provide evidence of 6 completed credits.

  • A student entering 11th grade will need to provide evidence of 12 completed credits.

  • A student entering 12th grade will need to provide evidence of 18 completed credits.

Reach out to our Diploma-seeking Specialist if you'd like to discuss this change.
