1.6 Wallet Funds FAQs (Kansas 25-26)

Updated over a week ago

Once your student is enrolled through OpenEd, you’ll receive access to a wallet of funds to support their unique learning plan. These funds can be used for educational materials and resources—as long as the purchase directly supports a subject or goal in your student’s individualized education plan. Think of it like how a traditional school might provide textbooks, software, or lab kits—only now you choose what best fits your child.

Q: What CAN funds be used for?

A: As mentioned above, funds can be used for educational resources that directly support your student’s learning. Things like curriculum, books, online courses, learning tools, and supplies tied to subjects or goals in their plan. Just like a traditional school might provide textbooks or lab kits, you get to choose what works best for your child.

Q: What CAN'T funds be used for?

A: Items that are not eligible include:

  • General household items (like furniture, rent, or cleaning supplies)

  • Family vacations (and travel expenses)

  • Non-academic extracurriculars (unless they’re part of the approved education plan)

  • Non-secular materials and curriculum

  • Anything that isn’t clearly tied to your student’s education plan

Q: What happens if I submit something ineligible?

A: Our team will notify you and explain why it wasn't approved. You’ll have the option to revise and resubmit if appropriate.

Q: Can I confirm that an item will be eligible for reimbursement before I make a purchase?

A: Absolutely! If your student’s education plan is finalized, we can review your item ahead of time. If it’s not yet finalized, we may not be able to guarantee approval. Email [email protected] for our team to review your request.

Q: Do I have to pay out-of-pocket for resources:

A: Only if you want to! Through OpenEd, you have options.

  1. No out-of-pocket required: You can select resources through our Marketplace, Rainbow Resource, or Amazon. Purchases through these avenues will be purchased on your behalf using your student’s wallet funds.

  2. Prefer to shop yourself? You’re welcome to buy eligible items out of pocket and request reimbursement, as long as the purchase aligns with your student’s education plan.

Q: When can I begin purchasing my student's curriculum?

A: You can begin purchasing educational materials during the Purchase Window, which runs from April 1 to March 31 of the program year.

  • Example: For the 2025–26 program year, the Purchase Window is April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026.

Q: When can I submit Requests for Reimbursement?

A: Full-Year Program: September 25 – April 30

Mid-Year Program: January 15 – April 30

Q: How many times can I submit a Reimbursement Request per year?

A: As many times as you need! If you're buying materials throughout the year, we recommend submitting receipts as you go to stay organized and avoid losing them.

Q: How long does it take to receive reimbursement?

A: Reimbursement requests are reviewed within 14 business days of submission.

Q: How will I receive my reimbursement?

A: Approved reimbursements are deposited directly to you via your preferred method (bank transfer, Paypal, Venmo or check). Be sure your payment method is up-to-date to avoid delays.

Q: Can I use my funds for non-secular curriculum?

A: No, but you can purchase any curriculum or resources that align with your student's education plan on your own.
