Q: What state assessments are required, and who takes them?
A: Students in grades 3–8 take the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) each year in English Language Arts and Math. Science assessments are also given in grades 5 and 8.
Social Studies (HGSS) assessments are classroom-based and administered by teachers in grades 4 and 7.
Q: Are there other required assessments?
A: Yes. All students in grades K–8 must take a Dyslexia Screener, as required by the Kansas State Department of Education. FastBridge is utilized for this screening.
Q: What are the student performance expectations?
A: Assessment results may be used to help place students in tiered support groups, but students are not held back based on performance.
Q: Can I opt my student out of state testing?
A: While Kansas does not have a law that explicitly allows parents to opt out, we acknowledge a parent’s right to choose non-participation. If you choose not to participate, a parent must submit a written letter to the Superintendent requesting to excuse their student from testing for the school year.
Q: Is virtual proctoring available?
A: Yes! Most assessments can be proctored virtually. Visit the Kansas Assessment Program page for more information.
