1.9 Participating in Local Sports/Activities FAQs

Updated over 2 months ago

Can my student participate in sports or other activities at my local school?

If your student is in grades K-8, please reach out directly to your local school to ask if your student can join the sport or other activity that they're interested in. The requirements for participation, and subsequent approval, are entirely up to your district.

If your student is in grades 9-12, then they should be able to join athletics or other activities at your local school if:

  • Your School of Enrollment does not offer the activity.

  • Your student meets all other eligibility requirements for the activity.

These requirements come from Rule 8.5.1(e) of the Oregon School Activities Association Handbook.

After you confirm that your School of Enrollment doesn't offer the sport or other activity that your student is interested in, please reach out to the athletic director at your boundary public school and request to participate under Rule 8.5.1(e). Your boundary school will likely need to coordinate with OpenEd and submit documentation to OSAA if necessary.

If my local school requires a sports fee to participate, can I be reimbursed for that?

Yes, OpenEd is able to reimburse for the sports fee from your local school. For more information on OpenEd's reimbursement process, take a look at 4.3 Reimbursement Process.
