As your student progresses through our program, you might come across some terminology that you haven't seen before.
Take a look at the glossary below to help you get up to date with the language that OpenEd uses. To make it easier for you to find what you're looking for, we've organized this list by different areas of focus.
Getting Started
Term | Definition |
Enrollment task | A task that you will need to complete to finish up your student's enrollment with OpenEd.
Some examples of enrollment tasks include: Uploading your student's birth certificate, agreeing to OpenEd's policies, or providing your student's immunization records (or exemption form). |
School of enrollment | The OpenEd school partner where your student will be enrolled as a full-time public student.
All of your student's official records and transcripts are stored, controlled, and maintained by your student's school of enrollment. |
State testing / Opt-out form | OpenEd students are required to either participate in all state tests or submit an opt-out form through the OpenEd platform.
Please note: Some state tests are mandatory for all students without the option to opt out. |
Proof of residency | A utility bill, mortgage, or rental statement issued in the past 60 days that includes your address.
You'll be asked to provide your proof of residency as one of your enrollment tasks. |
Immunization records / exemption form | As part of your enrollment tasks while enrolling your student, you'll be asked to upload your student's immunization records (or an exemption form) to comply with state immunization requirements. |
Student clubs | OpenEd offers optional opportunities for students to participate in clubs to connect with others who share similar interests.
You can view a full list of active student clubs here. |
Withdrawal | If you find that OpenEd is not a good fit for your student, you can withdraw them from the program through the OpenEd platform.
If you're considering withdrawal, make sure to review OpenEd's Withdrawal/Repayment Policy details first. |
Designing Your Student's Personalized Education Plan
Term | Definition |
Education plan | An education plan is a list of the subjects that your student will focus on during the school year. You will build your student's education plan as one of your enrollment tasks.
Your student's education plan creates a framework that allows both you and your student's teacher to track their progress. It serves as an easy way to prove that your student is fulfilling our program's academic and attendance requirements.
The education plan is also tied directly to your funding, since any items you purchase or submit for reimbursement must relate to one of the subjects that your student is studying. |
Required subject | A subject that your student must add to their education plan to fulfill the program's requirements for their grade level.
After a certain date during the semester, required subjects can't be changed. At the end of the Fall semester, you'll be able to adjust your student's required subjects for the Spring semester. |
Independent study | A completely optional subject meant to enrich your student's learning.
Independent studies can be added or deleted from your student's education plan at any time during the school year. |
Homeroom resources | All OpenEd students have free and unlimited access to educational resources that supplement your student's academic journey.
You can find these resources through OpenEd's marketplace. |
Early college credit | Students in grades 9-12 can earn college credits while enrolled in OpenEd; the college will generate a transcript with letter grade(s). |
Showing Active Participation
Term | Definition |
Learning log | Each week, your student will submit a learning log β a series of short reflections on what they're learning for their required subjects.
Learning logs display your student's active participation in the program. To remain enrolled with OpenEd, your student will need to submit all of their learning logs. |
Teacher | Your student's state-certified teacher will review and respond to each of their learning logs, providing helpful and supportive feedback along the way. |
Utilizing Your Funds
Term | Definition |
Marketplace | A wide range of curriculum resources available through the OpenEd platform. Some resources are free; others can be purchased using your OpenEd funds.
Every item in our marketplace is individually priced, so you can grab exactly what your student needs to succeed. |
Reimbursement | OpenEd can reimburse you for approved educational expenses that are related to your student's education plan.
You can submit for reimbursement through the Reimbursement menu option in our platform. |
Orders through OpenEd | To supplement your student's education, you can place orders for materials through Amazon or Rainbow Resource. |
Wallet | All OpenEd students in Oregon are provided with $2,500 in available funds, which you can find through your wallet in our platform.
Your wallet can be used to buy items from our marketplace or place orders through OpenEd. If you submit for reimbursement, those funds will be sent to your student's wallet. |
