Field Trips: Go Explore in Period 4!

  • Visits and passes to places like zoos, aquariums, and museums often fit in a Custom-built period 4 Science course (not Period 2 or 3).

  • Some museums directly relate to a Custom-built Period 4 Social Studies course.

  • A field trip to a storytelling festival or the library could be included in Custom-built Period 3.

  • To be approved for reimbursement under Math or Language Arts, the field trip needs to be to a place that specifically teaches Math or Language Arts (not just to a place where a student can use their math, reading, or writing skills, as that can happen anywhere).

  • Tickets to theater performances fit in a Custom-built Period 6 Theater course, or under Exploring Fine Arts.

Period 5 Technology, Entrepreneurship, Career & Technical Education, Family & Consumer Sciences

  • Period 5 Technology and Technology Allowance are not the same - resources are available for both!

  • Students can choose Custom-built Exploring Technology for Period 5. Exploring Technology is meant to encompass a variety of technology subjects.

    • For example, rather than choosing between Typing, Digital Photography, or 3D Printing, a student with Exploring Technology can study all three options throughout the year.

    • Relevant topics include Computer Science & Programming, Digital Media & Design, Electronics, Engineering, Game Design & Development, and Robotics (see 2024-25 Schedule Builder Guide - OR (K-8).

  • The focus of Digital Media and Design should be on the digital aspect. You may request reimbursement for up to $25 in art supplies under a Custom-built Digital Art course. Additional art supplies are reimbursable with a Period 6 or 7 Custom-built Art course or Technology Allowance.

  • Students can choose Custom-built Exploring Business and Marketing for Period 5, encompassing Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, and/or Leadership.

  • The focus of a Custom-built Entrepreneurship class must be on learning to start and operate a business (not on learning a specific skill that might one day become a business). Approved expenses could include materials, costs to set up a business website, design a logo, print flyers, pay for permits or licenses, curriculum items, etc.

  • Students can choose Exploring Careers or Exploring Family & Consumer Sciences in Period 5. These subjects encompass various topics; see 2024-25 Schedule Builder Guide - OR (K-8). Each subject can include the topics listed directly below.

Period 6 Elective

  • Dance falls under Fine Arts, not P.E.

    • Aerial Silks falls under Dance.

  • Students can choose Custom-built Exploring Fine Arts for Period 6 (or 7). Exploring Fine Arts is meant to encompass a variety of subjects. For example, rather than choosing between Dance or Art, a student with Exploring Fine Arts can study both options throughout the year. Relevant topics include Art, Dance, Music, and Theater.

  • Students can choose Exploring Careers, Exploring Family & Consumer Sciences, Exploring Fitness, or World Language Studies in Period 6 (or 7). These subjects encompass various topics; see 2024-25 Schedule Builder Guide - OR (K-8). Each subject can include the topics listed directly below.

Period 7 is OPTIONAL

  • Primarily for those wanting to add an additional My Tech High Direct option.

  • Adding a Period 7 course will affect a student’s available Technology Allowance.

  • Keep in mind that Technology Allowance can be used for subjects not listed on a student’s schedule.
