Common examples include:

  • City recreation programs

  • Community fine arts courses

  • Group dance classes

  • Driver’s education

  • Early college courses at a local university

The parent pays for the approved class and can be reimbursed for the tuition (excluding fees and supplies) up to $300 per period.

3rd Party Provider course criteria:

  • The course must be advertised to the general public (not just a specific group) through a website that includes full course details, specific dates, location of instruction, tuition, registration instructions, and contact information.

  • The class must be held between August 1 and May 31 and taught in a live group format.

  • The class must include more than one student.

  • If the class is self-paced, asynchronous, or video-recorded, then the period can be Custom-built.

How to add a 3rd Party Provider course to a schedule:

When adding a 3rd Party Provider course to your child’s schedule in Schedule Builder, you’ll need to include the following information:

  • Name of provider (i.e., Orem City Recreation)

  • Name of course (i.e., group swimming lessons)

  • Vendor phone

  • URL to the specific group class

3rd Party Provider FAQs

Can I choose a 3rd Party Provider for optional Period 7?

Yes! Keep in mind that a 3rd Party Provider class in optional Period 7 will reduce a student’s available Technology Allowance by $300 for full-year and $150 for mid-year enrolled students.

Can a parent be a 3rd Party Provider?

No. The 3rd Party Provider option is intended to allow students to participate in standard, non-customized classes available to the general public and run by agencies or businesses established to provide specific classes for the community. It is not intended for parents who organize or teach classes primarily for students participating in the OpenEd program. Private instruction, customized classes, or home-based courses may be reimbursed under the Custom-built option.

Can we combine 3rd Party Provider courses in one Period?

A student may participate in one 3rd Party Provider group class at a time per Period. If a student wants to participate in concurrent classes for one Period, the course must be Custom-built.

Here’s an example of an approved 3rd Party Provider course for P.E. with consecutive classes (covering multiple sports happening at different times):

  • City rec soccer from September to November

  • Basketball from December to February

  • Track from March to May

What if the class doesn’t meet every week?

If the 3rd Party Provider class doesn’t meet every week throughout the year, please supplement with related activities at home. The student needs to indicate participation in each subject in the Weekly Learning Log.
