If your student is in grades 9-12 and enrolled in OpenEd, they can opt to pursue a non-diploma-seeking path.
Students who choose the non-diploma-seeking path can still get into a great college (and regularly do!). We recommend contacting any colleges that your student is considering to ask the question: “What if my child does their schooling at home and doesn’t have a formal high school transcript? Can my student still attend your university?”
Most higher education institutions will provide a way, whether by reviewing a portfolio of work, requiring a high ACT or SAT score, or asking for a transcript of any early college credits earned by your student. We recommend contacting the universities your student is interested in to verify their entrance requirements.
What The Non-Diploma-Seeking Path Means For Your Student
Certificate of Completion
If your student is non-diploma-seeking, they won't earn a state-certified diploma from their school of enrollment.
Your student will earn an OpenEd Certificate of Completion, representing the culmination of their academic achievement.
Wider Curriculum Options
Non-diploma-seeking students aren't limited to the curriculum options that diploma-seeking students need to stick to.
Your student can utilize any of the curriculum options available in our marketplace, including:
Early college credit options
On-site split enrollment classes
CTE courses
Publicly available classes in your community
Educational curriculum and resources available outside of OpenEd
Technical college courses (which are FREE in Utah)
Greater Flexibility
Students might choose to be non-diploma-seeking for greater flexibility in tailoring their curriculum to their interests and goals.
Without the requirements of the diploma-seeking path, your student's academic journey can be uniquely tailored to fit their needs.

How To Choose The Non-Diploma-Seeking Path
While enrolling with OpenEd, you'll be asked to confirm your student's grade level.
On that grade confirmation screen, you'll be asked what track your student is interested in. From the dropdown menu, you can select either diploma-seeking or non-diploma-seeking.
If your student wants to pursue a non-diploma-seeking path, then you'd want to select the Utah 25-26 (Non-diploma-seeking) option.
Changed your mind?
If your student decides that they would like to switch to the diploma-seeking path, that transition can only happen between school years. Reach out to our Diploma-seeking Specialist if you'd like to discuss this change.
